About Us

Dragon Interior Design was built on the belief that a home should never feel like a showroom. Founded by Barry Zimmerman in Alpharetta, the studio emerged from a desire to offer design services that are both personal and practical. Barry, a longtime resident of Alpharetta, noticed that many homeowners felt excluded from the design process—either because they feared it was too expensive or because they assumed it required a complete renovation. He started Dragon Interior Design to close that gap, offering guidance that respects the client’s lifestyle, taste, and budget. The studio remains independently owned and intentionally small, allowing Barry and his team to remain directly involved in every project, from the first conversation to the final styling.

Our approach is rooted in observation. Before we recommend a single fabric swatch or furniture layout, we take time to understand how you actually use your space. We ask questions not only about aesthetics, but about daily routines, future plans, and even the aspects of your current home that frustrate you. This information shapes everything we do. We do not arrive with a predetermined style or a portfolio of looks we are eager to replicate. Instead, we respond to what we see and hear. This is why our projects—whether a compact condo or a sprawling family home—never look the same. They each carry the distinct fingerprint of the people who live there.

Because we are based in Alpharetta, we bring a nuanced understanding of the local architectural landscape. We are familiar with the specific floor plans found in neighborhoods across the area, from established traditional homes to newer construction. This local knowledge allows us to make informed decisions about spatial flow, natural light patterns, and material suitability for the regional climate. It also means we have cultivated respectful, long-term relationships with local artisans, workrooms, and independent suppliers. These connections allow us to source custom furniture, window treatments, and finishes that are not available through national retailers. We are proud to support other small businesses in our community.

Ultimately, we view our role as interpreters. Barry often describes the firm as a translator between what a client envisions and what the space can realistically become. We do not impose our preferences, nor do we disappear after delivering a plan. We remain present throughout construction, installation, and beyond. Many of our clients have worked with us on multiple homes over the years, and some have become friends. That continuity is not something we take for granted. It is the result of showing up, listening carefully, and treating every square foot of your home with the same consideration we would give our own.
